Clinical Health Psychology

With 27 years of clinical experience in pediatric and adult behavioral medicine, I value addressing both the physical and psychological wellness of individuals through the lifespan. I have specialized training with children, adolescents, adults and families. My therapeutic training is based in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). However, I enjoy implementing differing techniques into my therapeutic practices. I believe each client plays an active role in their customized treatment to address their concerns, expand insight and achieve desired goals. I have specialized training in anxiety and depressive disorders, stress management, PTSD, cyber bullying, NPD and NPD abuse, transitions associated with divorce, menopause, life stressors, and disasters. As well, I have significant training in the bidirectional relationship between one's mood and emotions and a diagnosis of chronic pain, GI disorders, functional disorders, difficulties surrounding menopause, migraines, CRPS, MCAS, dysautonomia, POTS, AMPS, hEDS, EDS and other rare medical disorders.
Certifications and Training
I hold a certification in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) from The Beck Institute for Cognitive Therapy and Research. In my ongoing training I have attained special certifications in child abuse prevention, human sexuality training, multicultural and disability training. Due to the pandemic, I attained a certification in COVID 19 and contract tracing from Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health to assure highest levels of safety and evaluation. ***TELEPSYCHOLOGY OFFERED**** NOW OFFERING IN PERSON SESSIONS
A pre-surgical psychological evaluation may be required before you can be approved for certain surgeries. This may include chronic pain procedures, transplant surgery, bariatric surgery and other surgical procedures.
Why a Pre-Surgical Evaluation?
A pre-surgical psychological evaluation assesses a client's mental state and readiness for surgery, by identifying potential risks and vulnerabilities that could impact recovery and ensuring the client understands the procedure and post-operative expectations.
What to expect
The pre-surgical psychological evaluation is conducted virtually. We review medical history, procedures and interventions, and psycho-social impacts of the presenting complaint. By identifying client readiness and client's expectations from the surgical procedure aids in optimizing recovery and ensures the client is making a well informed surgical decision.

Research and Publications
Dr. Markow's Research
Dr. Christine J. Markow has been conducting research in the field of behavioral medicine since 1995 as an undergraduate at the University of Vermont. Dr. Markow's passion for understanding the connections between the human systems and psychological distress was further solidified when she studied Chinese medicine and acupuncture at ATCTM in San Francisco, CA.
Dr. Markow began to synthesize that at the intersection of Eastern medicine, Western medicine and psychology everything in the human body appears to have a bi-directional relationship. Dr. Christine J Markow went on to make this her life's passion. Though 30 years later, we as a scientific community, are still in the infancy of understanding these connections to the fullest extent we are beginning to make some progress.
